Joshua D. Nelson, known professionally as Josh Nelson, is an American digital marketing entrepreneur, author and speaker. He is the co-founder of Plumbing & HVAC SEO, a marketing agency serving the plumbing and heating, ventilation and air conditioning trades, and the founder of Seven Figure Agency, a coaching and mentorship company for digital marketing agency owners.[1][2]

Nelson's two companies have together been named to the Inc. 5000 list of America's fastest-growing private companies nine times: four listings for Plumbing & HVAC SEO between 2016 and 2019, and five consecutive listings for Seven Figure Agency between 2022 and 2026.[1][4] He is the author of two books for agency owners and speaks on agency growth, niche specialization and client retention.[3][9]

Early life and education

Nelson was born on May 18, 1982, in Munster, Indiana. His parents, Scott and Dori Nelson, were Christian missionaries, and he spent the first nine years of his life in Haiti.[14] The family returned to the United States when he was nine, settling in South Florida, where he attended Florida Christian School in Miami. He was a competitive tennis player during his school years.[14]

He went on to Florida International University, graduating in 2004 with a Bachelor of Business Administration.[14]

Career

Early ventures

Nelson started his first web design and hosting company in 2000, building websites for local businesses.[2] He subsequently joined ReachLocal, one of the early internet marketing firms serving local advertisers, where he worked on paid media and search optimization at scale.[2] In the mid-2000s he launched a full-service generalist marketing agency for local businesses. He has described that venture as the one that failed to differentiate and stalled, and credits it as the origin of the niche-specialization thesis that defines his later work.[2]

Plumbing & HVAC SEO

Nelson's agency operates as Clic, Inc., incorporated in 2010, with operations beginning in November 2011.[10] In 2011 he rebuilt the business around a single vertical, marketing services for plumbing and HVAC contractors, and it began trading as Plumbing & HVAC SEO.[2] The company reported growth of 333 percent over three years to $4.5 million in annual revenue, and later passed $7 million.[2][3] It serves plumbing and HVAC clients across the United States and Canada.[2]

Plumbing & HVAC SEO appeared on the Inc. 5000 four times, ranked No. 1,166 in 2016, No. 3,056 in 2017, No. 4,310 in 2018 and No. 4,693 in 2019, and was additionally listed at No. 171 on the 2020 Inc. 5000 Regionals Florida list.[5]

Seven Figure Agency

Nelson began selling courses for agency owners in 2013 and founded Seven Figure Agency as a company in 2017, teaching the operating model he had used at his own agency.[2][10] The company provides coaching, frameworks and a peer community for digital marketing agency owners, and is co-led with his wife, Yesenia Nelson.[1][6] In November 2023 the company announced it had passed the mark of 100 member agencies scaled past seven figures in revenue.[7]

In February 2025 Seven Figure Agency announced its acquisition of AgencyCollective, a consulting and community firm serving digital marketing agencies.[6]

Seven Figure Agency has been named to the Inc. 5000 in five consecutive years: No. 275 in 2022, No. 1,086 in 2023, No. 2,517 in 2024, No. 3,972 in 2025 and No. 3,349 in 2026, the last on 87 percent three-year growth.[4]

TopMarketingAgencies.com

In 2025 Nelson launched TopMarketingAgencies.com, an editorial directory of niche marketing agencies. The site lists vetted specialist agencies across a range of industries and is editorially ranked rather than operating on a paid-placement model.[2]

The 7-Figure Agency Roadmap sets out Nelson's framework for building a digital marketing agency past seven figures in annual revenue, covering niche selection, client acquisition, delivery, retention and building a management layer.[12] The Client Retention Handbook is a narrower work on reducing client churn, covering onboarding cadence, review structure, pricing and packaging, and client communication.[12]

Approach and views

Nelson's central argument is that marketing agencies should specialize in a single industry vertical rather than serve all comers, a position he summarizes as "the riches are in the niches."[2] He holds that specialists can charge more, retain clients longer and grow faster than generalists, because they know the channel mix, pricing and regulatory conditions specific to one kind of client.[2]

The second half of his framework is operational: installing repeatable systems, hiring ahead of demand, and building a management team so that the agency functions without the founder's daily involvement, which he frames as the difference between owning a job and owning an asset.[2]

He also treats client retention as the highest-leverage variable in agency economics, and has described reducing monthly churn at his own agency from 9 percent to under 2 percent through account-management structure and review cadence.[9]

Speaking and media

Nelson speaks on agency growth, niche specialization, client retention and agency operations. Past stages include the Traffic & Conversion Summit, the HighLevel LevelUP Summit, AdWorld, The Local Summit and DigitalMarketer events, alongside his own Seven Figure Agency Intensive and Roadmap LIVE events.[9]

He hosts the Seven Figure Agency Podcast, a series of interviews with agency owners, and co-hosts the Scaling Together Podcast with Yesenia Nelson.[13] He has appeared as a guest on industry podcasts including Perpetual Traffic and Agency Operators.[3]
